The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong is delighted to announce a guided viewing of Transcending Transience: Art and Culture of Late-Ming Jiangnan at The CUHK Art Museum with Prof. Maggie Wan.
Initiated by Professor James Watt, the exhibition showcases 193 sets of artworks ranging from paintings and calligraphy to ceramics, jade, bronze, and lacquer. These pieces vividly illustrate the material culture, intellectual trends, and aesthetic preferences of the emerging middle class in the Jiangnan region during the late 16th to early 17th centuries. The tour will feature exhibition highlights to reveal how and why late Ming art, which is viewed as unconventional, is nevertheless visually appealing, archaistic yet creative, popular yet elegant.
This exhibition, sponsored by the Bei Shan Tang Foundation, is jointly organized by the Art Museum and the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), in collaboration with the Shanghai Museum. Featuring 90 sets of objects on loan from the Shanghai Museum. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Museum für Asiatische Kunst, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Liang Yi Museum, and renowned local collections, the opening of this exhibition also marked the inauguration of the Art Museum’s new wing, the Lo Kwee Seong Pavilion, and the newly constructed Harold and Christina Lee Gallery.
