The Oriental Ceramic Society is delighted to announce an exclusive guided viewing of the newly open private museum, Guwei Museum, with three exhibitions currently on show: their permanent collection, special exhibitions “Chinese Dragon and Snake Connection – The snake in the Chinese and foreign cultures” and “Traces of Travelling the Mountains and Seas: Simon Yung Solo Exhibition”.

The permanent collection exhibition is organised around thematic collections, with the cultural-artistic themes. It features a diverse array of treasures from both China and abroad, divided into nine distinct areas: “The Tale of the Porcelain Teapot,” “Export Items of the Ming and Qing Dynasty China Trade,” “Colour Varieties of Chinese Porcelain Teapot during the Qing Dynasty,” “Chinoiseries,” “Chinese Textiles,” “Treasured Ornaments, Chinese and Overseas,” “Chinese and Foreign Calligraphy and Painting,” “Court Art and Imperial Style of the Qing Dynasty,” and “Silver Resplendent in Flowing Light.”

The special exhibition “Chinese Dragon and Snake Connection – The Snake in Chinese and Foreign Cultures” explores the cultural significance of the snake across various civilisations, with a particular emphasis on its role in Chinese culture. As an ancient totem, the snake symbolises fertility and transformation, often affectionately referred to as “little dragons.” Featured in the zodiac and adorning the ceremonial attire of rulers during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the snake holds a prominent place in history. In celebration of the Year of the Snake in 2025, the museum will showcase snake-related artifacts, highlighting their importance in both Chinese and Western cultures while wishing visitors a prosperous New Year filled with fulfilled aspirations.

For “Traces of Travelling the Mountains and Seas: Simon Yung Solo Exhibition”, this exhibition will feature the latest ink works of contemporary artist Simon Yung, showcasing the fusion of contemporary art and traditional techniques. Taking reference from various interpretations in the Ming and Qing, the artist reconstructed imageries from the ancient Chinese book Shanhai Jing through various styles of painting. Simon Yung, a Hong Kong native, holds a Master’s in Chinese Literature and has exhibited widely in Hong Kong abroad, earning numerous accolades.
