Dates: 7-12 November 2025
The OCS is delighted to announce an exclusive study tour to Hangzhou and Shanghai.
The tour will begin in Hangzhou where we plan to visit the Liangzhu Museum, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, and the newly-opened Yujiashan Archaeological Museum, the first archaeology museum in Zhejiang.
The trip will continue on to Shanghai where the highlight will be two guided viewings at the Shanghai Museum, and a guided walking tour on Art Deco buildings in Shanghai. The first by Dr Lu Pengliang follows on from his OCS Susan Chen Foundation Lecture on the Metropolitan Museum’s exhibition of later Chinese bronzes: ‘Recasting the Past: The Art of Chinese Bronzes, 1100–1900’ last year. The second guided viewing will be by Mr Henk Nieuwenhuys who donated his Qing dynasty Blue-and-White collection to the Shanghai Museum, along with his bronze collection. The guided walking tour will be delivered by Shanghai Art Deco, a famed non-profit in the city, focusing on the city’s Art Deco buildings and its history.
The above itinerary is indicative and may be subject to change
Dr Pengliang Lu is the Brooke Russell Astor Curator of Chinese Art in the Department of Asian Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He received his PhD from the Bard Graduate Center, New York, where his research focused on bronzes of the Yuan Dynasty. He has curated multiple exhibitions on Chinese decorative arts at the Met including most recently Embracing Color: Enamel in Chinese Decorative Arts, 1300–1900 (2022). From 2002 to 2008, he worked at the Shanghai Museum. He has published widely on Chinese ceramics, bronzes, cloisonné and literati objects.
Henk Nieuwenhuys is a Dutch-Canadian collector with a deep passion for Chinese antiquities. Inheriting a family collection of blue-and-white export porcelain, he has become a leading Western patron of Chinese art, donating over 150 objects to cultural institutions—including major donations to the Shanghai Museum, as well as to the Guangzhou Thirteen Hongs Museum, and Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University Museum. He has been honoured with Shanghai’s Magnolia Silver (2012) and Gold (2014) Awards in recognition of his extensive contributions.
