In our first online lecture, Prof. Jacobs drew upon the research he conducted in writing his new book, The Compensations of Plunder, to reveal how the attitudes of Chinese officials towards Western archaeologists like Marc Aurel Stein and Paul Pelliot changed, from the end of the Qing Dynasty into the beginning years of the Republic of China, ironically souring as the Chinese scholars began to see antiquities in the same way as Western scholars did: as symbols of a shared national heritage and of political legitimacy. This online lecture is now available on the OCS video channel.
